does anyone think we could could get an actual power league off the ground next year? I think the region took a nice step with the open div this year. I'd love to see the top 17/18's commit to 3 weekends. A 2 day seeding event in Dec. then a 1 day event in Jan and Feb. Then we're done. We keep the price reasonable and get some good vball happening here. I think it could be a great and more economical option to MAPL (should be called MAPT b/c it's not a power league). thoughts?

I am also curious how this would work. I've heard some rumors of problems that arose with the onset of the Open division - when some teams didn't like the format/requirements that were set. From what I can tell, it seems the problems got ironed out, but I will be curious to see how the clubs like the competition and the format...

I too heard there were some problems, and I know some teams have already received invites for the Open division. Does anyone know how many teams they decided to keep for each age-division? Or know where I can find that? I looked but maybe I'm blind...highly possible.

Are you talking about having 3 2-day tournaments in NC for a power league? Otherwise, not sure how this would be different than the current top teams in the Open div playing a seeding tournament and 3 1-day tourneys in Jan/Feb/Mar.

Well, the first difference that I could see is that bandit's suggestion of having only two 1-day events (after the seeding tournament) would require fewer commitment dates/weekends than spiker's post mentions with the three 1-day events (after the seeding tournaments).
IMHO, in reality the teams that are playing in open should be teams who are managing a HEAVY national schedule; so in order to even participate in region events, they need the region events to be few and highly competitive. Some folks may not realize this, but many of the top level teams practice at least partially on weekend's (Fri/Sat/Sun) due to the distance some of their players travel just to participate in that club. If the Open teams are required to play in-region on certain weekends, we need to do our best to ensure that the overall competition is - at the very least - equal to what they would achieve in a practice in their own gyms. I mean, why would they give up an entire weekend of training (for a 2-day event) or part of a weekend of training (for a 1-day event) if they could get more accomplished to prepare for their next qualifier or big event by simply practicing?

So the difference is 2 1-day events following the Dec seeding tournament in the suggested "power league", vs. 3 1-day events following the Dec seeding tournament as currently done in the Open div? An extra 1-day tournament is the difference? I must be missing something here...
